Forgotten realms draft guide9/28/2023 ![]() ![]() The overall story of a familiar going rogue and causing mischief may be a reference to the Disney classic Fantasia. Interestingly we also get the first Otter with a class in the form of Frolicking Familiar who is an Otter Wizard. WoE also added more Otters added to the game, representing the fourth and fifth Otters in Magic respectively. The Goose Mother also makes use of the returning Food mechanic, which was a feature of the other notable Magic goose: Gilded Goose. It's the first Simic-colored legendary Hydra and the first Simic color identity legendary bird as well. There have only been two other Hydras with flying: including the similarly Simic Hydroid Krasis and the red Shivan Devastator. While pairing the Hydra creature type with an animal is not unheard of, what is quite interesting is that this is the first pair of a Hydra and Bird. One of the most fascinating cards in Wilds of Eldraine is The Goose Mother, a monstrous subversion of the Mother Goose fairy tale character. The fact that the Werefox is not a double-faced card like Innistrad's werewolves, helps further highlight that Eldraine's lycanthropes are more fairy tale heroes than they are horror story monsters. Notably, Werefox Bodyguard can be used to either remove an enemy's creatures or protect one's own creatures from removal or boardwipes, underscoring the creature's dual nature. ![]() Werewolf stories of this time play with themes of contrasting beastliness with nobility, a tension at play in this card as we see a ferocious humanoid fox in armor protecting an innocent. The Lay of Bisclavet tells of a knight trapped in the form of a wolf who eventually regains his human form due to the trust of his king. Old Werewolf stories in medieval times used to be about knights who turned into wolves. While the Werefox in question can be read as a reference to the beast in Beauty in the Beast, as we see Besotted Knight proposing to the Werefox later, the specific creature type Knight adds another dimension to the Werefox. Eventually, they decide to begin to become the musicians for Bremen, and the story is about their adventures on the way, with them never quite getting there.Īnother interesting creature type combo is Werefox Bodyguard. This little-known Grimm Fairy Tale is the story of overworked, old farm animals who decide to escape their farm. Liberated Livestock, a Cat Bird Ox depicting the animals frolicking in freedom, is likely a reference to the Town Musicians of Bremen. However, some of the more esoteric creature-type combinations reference similarly esoteric fairy tales. Erriete and her apple are references to Snow White's Wicked Queen, Agatha is a reference to the witch from Hansel and Gretel and Hylda is a reference to the Snow Queen. Interestingly the cursed role doesn't actually do anything to change the creature type of a creature that has it, despite how the art depicts the transformation. The Cursed role, for example, is used to reference any number of fairy tale transformations, from humans into donkeys (as in Pinnocio) or princes into Frogs (inspired by the Frog Prince). Some of the fairy tale references in Wilds of Eldraine are relatively straightforward. ![]()
